Penny Stock Update: Amid earnings season and the Federal Reserve’s policy announcement, Wall Street indexes ended sharply lower overnight, dragged down by mega-cap and technology sector stocks. Asian markets also saw a sell-off, pushing indices into negative territory.

Indian benchmark indices opened lower, following the same trend, with information technology and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) stocks the worst performers. With a gain of around 1.5%, BSE Telecommunications emerged as the best-performing sector.

At 10:35 am, the BSE Sensex was down 0.38%, touching the level of 59,275. The Nifty 50 index fell 0.29% to 17,597 levels. On the Sensex, Power Grid Corporation of India, State Bank of India and Mahindra & Mahindra were the top gainers, while Tech Mahindra, HCL Technologies and Bajaj Finance were the market draggers.

On the BSE, the advance-decline ratio was strongly in favor of the advance, with 1,947 shares rising and 1,191 shares falling. Broader indices outperformed the major indices by a significant margin, with the BSE Smallcap Index rising over 1%. Shares of Trident Ltd, the top BSE smallcap gainer, jumped over 8%, keeping small-cap bulls busy.
