PVR now operates over 908 screens in 182 properties across 78 cities in India and Sri Lanka after opening the Chennai Airport Multiplex. Multiplex operator PVR has 12 properties in Chennai alone. which has 77 screens. The new multiplex opened at Chennai Airport is PVR’s 14th property in Chennai. PVR aims to operate 1,000 screens by the end of financial year 2024, said Sanjeev Kumar Bijli, Joint Managing Director, PVR Ltd.

PVR Cinemas started as Priya Cinemas in Vasant Vihar, Delhi. The movie was named after Priya Jaisinghani. In 1978, Priya Cinema was bought by Ajay Bijli’s father. In 1988, Ajay Beazley took over its management. His success led to the establishment of PVR Cinemas. In 2003 ICICI Ventures invested Rs 40 crore in PVR. In May 2016, DLF Group-owned DT Cinemas was acquired by PVR Cinemas for Rs 500 crore. Then on 27 March 2022, PVR announced its tie-up with INOX Leisure, India’s second largest cinema chain. In June 2022, PVR announced a partnership with French high-end theater company, Ice Theaters, to open new premium theaters in India. These ice theaters are part of the famous CGR theaters in France.
