Maharashtra accounts for 39% of the total operating sugar mills. The combined production of these factories is 47 lakh tonnes. Which is 39% of the country’s total sugar production till December. Maharashtra has also overtaken the country’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, in terms of total factories and production of sugar. There are 117 sugar factories operating in Uttar Pradesh. Their combined production is 30.9 lakh tonnes of sugar. There are 196 sugar factories in Maharashtra. Their combined sugar production is 46.8 lakh tonnes. But surprisingly Karnataka produced 26.7 lakh tonnes of sugar there through only 73 sugar mills.
Other states have also produced good sugar. For example, 16 operational factories in Gujarat produced a total of 3.8 lakh tonnes of sugar. There are 24 sugar mills in Tamil Nadu and sugar production is 2.6 lakh tonnes.

According to the Maharashtra government, a total of 203 sugar factories will be opened in the state this sugar season. And their combined production capacity at the end of the season is estimated at 1 crore 38 lakh tonnes. Maharashtra overtook Uttar Pradesh in sugar production last season. Sebar Maharashtra produced 1 crore 37 lakh tonnes of sugar. In terms of production of ethanol, Maharashtra is also at the top. Its amount is 35%. The way the season has started, many are expecting a repeat of last season.
